Earlier this month, I drove to Old Delhi on an overcast morning to spend some time with friends visiting India. Since ‘namaz’ was not ongoing, the compounds were quiet except for a few tourist groups. The red sandstone under my feet was wet from the rain earlier that morning and gave the place a completely different feel.
The picture below captures my favorite part of the visit. The contrasts that Old Delhi has to offer – the old houses clustered together right next to the wide open areas of the mosque. It captured not only Old Delhi, but the essence of this country. The call of namaz along with the sounds of prayers from a gurudwara and the aarti from a temple, the elegant composition of sentences including both urdu and hindi words, and the smells of multiple cuisines in close proximity.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera but my phone didn’t exactly fail me on this occasion. And while I might not be going to India for quite a few months now, I know that every little memory I’ve captured over time will be a reminder of home.
